Since 1974, Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, CA, has played a significant role in increasing public awareness of the artistic capabilities and achievements of people with disabilities.  Creative Growth provides a professional studio environment for artistic development and gallery exhibition.

These opportunities in turn create a poignant social atmosphere among peers to over 150 adult artists with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities.  Artwork created within the studio is exhibited directly in the Creative Growth gallery as well as in outside galleries, museums, and private collections throughout the world.  The visiting artists program allows the studio artists to collaborate with contemporary artists in varying media and from around the globe.

“The artists create the world in which they really want to live," says Tom di Maria, the center’s director. “Art becomes this transformative tool to try and change reality."
